Live Steam Railroading

Outdoor miniature railroading and live steam is a hobby that has been enjoyed by millions of people worldwide since the late-1800s. Walt Disney and his fellow animators built one of the best known backyard railroads, the Carolwood Pacific, at his Holmby Hills home on Carolwood Drive. This layout served as the inspiration and launching point for Disneyland. Today there are hundreds of live steam clubs and hundreds more backyard and estate railroads around the world. "Live Steam" refers to our engines while scaled down, they are fired by steam just like the prototype.  Typical fuels for the boilers include coal, oil, propane and wood.

The Kern County Live Steamers

The Kern County live steamers are a non-profit group of Bakersfield-area railroad enthusiasts that officially formed in 2001. According to club president Roger Frymire, the idea was sparked by a ride-on park train he had experienced as a child in the 1960s. Responding to an ad in a local hobby shop, Roger soon met up with Tom Osterdock, who also wanted to start a live steam club. After setting up a table at the Bakersfield Model Train Show, the idea gained momentum and the club incorporated. A year later they were running engines on a portable loop of panel track, which allowed them to further raise money and interest. KCLS is now searching for a permanent home in the San Joaquin Valley in the Bakersfield area.

At the California Antique Farm Equipment Show

KCLS will be operating trains and giving rides to the public on their 7.5" gauge panel track at the California Antique Farm Equipment Show. The equipment at the show will include a narrow gauge 0-4-0 live steamer and a 1:8 scale gas driven model of a Santa Fe F7 diesel locomotive.
